Generative AI

Generative AI services can be grouped into the following categories, each with their own unique considerations and potential risks.

Free

Free consumer services consumed as individual user subscription. Standard terms and conditions and acceptable use policies. All data should be considered as publicly shared and used to train the models. Examples include free versions of OpenAI ChatGPT, OpenAI DALL-E, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, and Google Gemini.

Paid Consumer

Purchased as an individual user subscription, not supplied by the NU System. Standard terms and conditions and acceptable use policies. May include data protection, but may still use your data to train the models. Examples include paid subscriptions for OpenAI ChatGPT, OpenAI DALL-E, Microsoft Copilot Pro, Perplexity, Claude, and Google Gemini.

Enterprise

Services purchased through a campus or system agreement. Negotiated terms and conditions and acceptable use policies to comply with NU System requirements. Include data protection. Examples include Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Copilot for 365, Zoom AI Companion, and OpenAI ChatGPT Enterprise.

Custom

Custom developed generative AI chatbots and services. Benefits, risks, and controls are unique to each custom configuration. Examples include OpenAI Custom GPTs, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Azure AI, AWS AI, and Llama.

Use of Generative AI within the NU System

What tools are available for you?

Based on existing enterprise services offered at the University of Nebraska, NU ITS is exploring where it makes sense to first activate AI features within these widely-used tools.  We recommend that you check back regularly, as we intend to update this page frequently as new AI-related services and AI-based pilots move forward and become more broadly available.

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot with enterprise data protection (formerly Bing Chat Enterprise) is an everyday AI companion, providing Chat GPT4 AI-powered chat for the web. Copilot is actively being piloted and it is expected to be the recommended way to use generative AI within the NU System environment in the near future.

Zoom AI Companion

Zoom AI Companion brings AI-powered post-meeting summaries, making virtual meetings more accessible and efficient across all devices. Faculty and staff can activate this service for meetings they host on their NU System Zoom account. Zoom Meeting Summary is available on a meeting-by-meeting basis if enabled by the meeting organizer. Zoom AI Companion is also being piloted at specific campuses.

Microsoft Copilot for 365

Copilot for Microsoft 365 combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with the NU System’s own protected data within the flow of work by working alongside Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Copilot for Microsoft 365 is an optional service and is not included in NU's Microsoft license agreement. NU-ITS is currently running a phased pilot project to evaluate the viability and cost-effectiveness of Copilot for Microsoft 365 within the NU System.

Support

Generative AI platforms come with unknowns and uncertainties. The NU-ITS Help Desk can help you access Generative AI platforms but cannot consult on topics like AI prompt engineering, accessing specific AI models, or other specific uses.
